October Is the Month for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness

According to various sources from “Mississippi State Department of Health” we are told that the month of October is to be announced as a month to create awareness on “Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) says a source. Time and again throughout the globe it has been seen that Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), can happen to babies who are healthy and yet have lost their lives unexpectedly, says a source. Even after the death of the baby, the explanations for the same are never found all that easily and hence, the month of October has been dedicated to raise awareness for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and to bring hope and relief to millions across the world who may have lost a loved one.

Experts with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) say that the disease attacks kids who are between a week to a year old and last year forty five cases alone have been reported in Mississippi, says a source. mothers and caregivers were doled out special instructions to introduce safer environments for the babies they nurture and care for by the MSDH, says a source, so that the risks of your infant to suffer at the hands of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) can be brought down to a large extent.

The report by MSDH last week clearly stated the following:

  1. When an infant sleeps, the infant should be placed stomach upwards so that they can breathe normally.
  2. Caregivers and mother should ensure that a sheet is placed always on the firm mattress used for the crib where the baby sleeps; this is what can prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and is a recommended practice, says a source.
  3. The crib shouldn’t have any objects which are soft, so remove quilts, pillows and even those comforters; they wouldn’t allow your baby to move and breathe well. Even stuffed toys, or sheepskin products and dolls should be kept away from the crib.
  4. Keep the crib separate but not too far from where the parents or the caregiver sleeps. Don’t sleep with the baby on the same bed or the couch, that could be dangerous and the baby could be a victim unknowingly of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
  5. Doctors opine breast milk or mothers milk is the best for the first six months, this brings down the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
  6. Don’t make your baby wear too many clothing items to keep him warm, the temperature in the bedroom shouldn’t be uncomfortable for him or else he could face Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) due to suffocation.
  7. Avoid smoking around when a pregnant woman is in the same room and DON’T SMOKE in front of the baby. This could be second hand smoke no doubt but would increase the chances of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) on your baby.

You should give this write up out to all caregivers, mothers and child care providers so that they know what could be done to avoid Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
